Healing from a Childhood That Wasn’t Safe or Supportive

If your childhood was marked by emotional neglect, constant criticism, unpredictability, or fear—healing in adulthood can feel like learning to breathe again. It may manifest as self-doubt, people-pleasing, fear of confrontation, or chronic anxiety.

In Indian households, where parental authority is rarely questioned, many of us grew up suppressing our voices. We learned to perform for approval rather than be accepted as we are. This trauma can sit quietly in our nervous systems for years, until something finally brings it to the surface.

Signs of an unsafe emotional childhood:
1. Feeling responsible for other people’s emotions
2. Struggling with self-worth and boundaries
3. A deep fear of abandonment or failure

Healing practices:
1. Inner child work: speak to the younger version of yourself with love and validation
2. Acknowledge the truth of your story—without minimizing it
3. Build emotional safety in the present: safe friends, safe spaces, safe habits
4. Seek therapy to explore trauma-informed support

You didn’t deserve what happened to you. But now, you get to choose what happens next. You can be the safe space your younger self never had.
